Garden Surf Cottage and/or Rainbow House

A short walk from the beach and some of the best surf on Kaua'i!

Hanalei Bed and Bay offers two distinct but charming accommodations moments away from the beach and bay of Hanalei: A rustic Garden Surf Cottage and elegant Rainbow House.

Landscaped for individual privacy, both vacation rentals share the same landscape of coco palms, limes, oranges, avocado, breadfruit papayas, and other tropical ornamentals. The premises are located one block from Hanalei Bay on the North Shore of Kaua'i

Both the Garden Surf Cottage and Rainbow House are at the quiet end of the cu-de-sac of Malolo Place and are within a short walk or bicycle ride of the nearby town of Hanalei, which lies sandwiched between mountain peaks cascading with distant waterfalls and the emerald shores of Hanalei Bay.

Hanalei is an hour drive from the airport of Lihu'e and is the gateway to the Na Pali Coast.

Garden Surf Cottage

More or less 450 sq ft/42 sq m  View .

A rustic retreat [make sure you and your traveling companion understands the definition of rustic], this cottage is a small but charming two room plantation green cottage with white trim that sleeps two. A great honeymoon retreat. Rustic in its simplicity, this cottage was designed in the single wall construction popular during the 1930's and which has been lovingly restored with tropical ceiling fans in each room.

An open air lanai covers both sides of the cottage.

The kitchen is well supplied with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, table, chairs, a double deep sink, refrigerator, a two gas burner stove, and toaster oven. View of Cottage kitchen

Cool Spanish pavers tile the floors throughout. Custom cabinetry is found in both rooms. The indoor shower is attractively lined with alpine slate. A pedestal sink graces the bathroom.

The only bedroom has a queen sized bed, a telephone w/answer machine, and a radio/CD / MP 3 player with a compliment of CD's. There is a flat panel TV connected to cable. There is a DVD player and WI FI internet access. Includes towels and linens.

The laundry area is shared with Rainbow House, with a private entrance giving you access to a tiled laundry area equipped with a washer and dryer.

Rainbow House

In contrast to our "Garden Surf Cottage", but located on the same property, is the Rainbow House...a elegant and colorful three bedroom tropical vacation rental, capable of sleeping up to six, with all the amenities you would want or expect.

Rainbow House is built in the old style of "board and batten" and on stilts; graced with high ceilings to keep the days cool. You'll find ceiling fans in every room as well. Old fashioned double hung windows are found throughout and will keep the hottest day at bay, as well as offer great views from most rooms.

Lanai of the Rainbow House from the perspective of a hammock looking into the mountains      Back porch of the Rainbow House overlooking the back lawn

The panorama from the spacious lanai, kitchen, and dining room offers some exquisite views of waterfalls cascading in the distance. The tiled lanai has a bench, hammock, chairs, and a lazy rocking chair where you can spend the day counting waterfalls. The screened back porch has a table and chairs and a delightful view of the garden.

The dining and living area boasts a big dining room table with chairs and two comfortable couches. Both areas are great to linger and to lounge. A VCR and DVD player and small inventory of Videos are there to entertain. A radio/CD / MP3 player and a compliment of CD's will set the mood. There is cable TV and internet access.

Photo of the well appointed kitchen of the Rainbow House  Clic for larger image. Custom kitchen cabinetry with a counter of blue tile work encloses a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal, and a vented four burner stove and oven. The kitchen is well supplied with all the essentials necessary to easily cook and eat well at home. A telephone w/answering machine is within easy reach. Comes with linens and towels.

Multicolored bright tinted plastered walls with arches and custom motifs have ceramic wall sconces highlighting Brazilian red cherry floors in every room. Each bedroom is tastefully well appointed with a queen sized bed, closet, curtains, and linens.

Master bathroom with pedestal sink and shower      Child in a tub of the Rainbow House

Two bathrooms are colorfully tiled with contrasting pedestal sinks and showers. One bathroom has a tub which is especially useful for a "soak " after a day of hiking or surfing.

Below, on the first floor is the entrance leading into a small foyer with a private entrance leading to a tiled laundry area equipped with a washer and dryer, that is shared with the occupants of Garden Cottage.

Some Rainbow House Reviews
  • I got so wrapped up in work again I forgot to tell you how wonderful our stay was a the rainbow house. We really had
an excellent time at the house. We will definitely have to stay in the house again.
  • I wanted to send a quick email and thank you for an amazing place to stay in Kaua'i. There wasn't
a thing more we could have asked for (well, except for fewer mesquites!). We had a very relaxed
time, made friends with the geckos, chickens, and the families that came and went from the cottage
house. The maids are doing a great job and were very friendly. We also took advantage of kayaking and had a great time. The
rainbow house is on the top of our must go back to list and we will defiantly not hesitate to recommend it to anyone going
that way. Thanks again! --Terri, Scott and family
  • Just wanted to say Thank You for our terrific stay a the Rainbow House...we had a great time and all worked
out just great in the end. We already miss the warm weather and great waves. --Jami Goleski
  • Rainbow house is my refuge - simple and luxurious, exotic and zen. It is easy to book and everything exactly as promised. The house is very clean, no clutter, and classy. -- Dr. Sandy Ritz
