Limahuli Valley and Gardens

  • Rating: Very Easy.
  • Time: 2 to 4 hours.
  • Everyday except Saturdays and Mondays
  • Price person: $84/person (4 person minimum)

In Hawaiian "limahuli" means turned hand and this is a soft adventure stroll suitable for all ages; well within everyone's abilities. Associated with the Pacific Botanical Tropical Garden of Lawai, this valley is being restored back to its pre-contact (i.e. Capt Cook) splendor. Some of the lois (taro patches) have been restored and are functioning units and growing the heart shaped kalo (taro). Well landscaped and a maintained trail, meanders up the valley and east facing hill, with benches strategically located to rest and to take the beauty and essence of this emerald valley. For all participants a guidebook in English/or Japanese is provided for reference along the way and to take home as a souvenir. Native botanical plants are numbered and identified along the trail and explained in detail in your guidebook. In route to Limahuli, time is taken along the way to appreciate some of the roadside attractions.

Hanakapi'ai Beach and/or Falls

In Hawaiian one of the meanings of this valley is "bay sprinkling food". In pre-contact times, its valley floor was terraced with rock walls and auwais (irrigation ditches) that diverted up-stream and allowed water to continue to flow through the taro patches and back to the stream. For a short time after post-contact, coffee was grown up the valley and these plants can be still seen growing wild with their red berries.

This hike can be broken up into two segments.

Hanakapi'ai Beach

  • Rating: Moderate to Strenuous.
  • Time: Three to six hours round trip.
  • Everyday of the week
  • Price person: $126/person (4 person minimum)

This trail, which is part of the famous Na Pali Coast trail, begins at the end of Hwy. 560 at Ke'e Lagoon. You begin gaining elevation along a garden of coco palms, lianas, ferns, exotic and some native plants. Half-hour into you journey you will come to the first of many lookouts and vistas of the Na Pali Coast with waves breaking below. If you know where to look and depending on the time of the year you can see the green sea turtle, humpback whales, or dolphins in the distance. One hour and half late we will descend to Hanakapi'ai Beach where we can take a long break for lunch and swim in the stream.

Hanakapi'ai Falls

  • Rating: More Strenuous.
  • Time: Six to eight hours round trip.
  • Everyday of the week
  • Price person: $168/person (4 person minimum)

Where the beach ends, the trail to the beautiful falls of Hanakapi'ai continues. In a shady trail we will gain elevation gradually with several crossing of burbling streams. Along the way you cannot but feel the old Hawaiian presence as we climb and skirt the many elaborate rock walls and terraces. An hour and half later we will arrive at the base of the precipitous Hanakapi'ai waterfalls for lunch and for a swim in one of the many clear pools.
